General

As for the email communication, the Molecular Modeling Team members have numerous options and choices available. There are two local servers that can host e-mail accounts or that can forward mails to external destinations.

The team local mail server is marge.uochb.cas.cz and every team member can have an e-mail account on it; the members having account on any of the clusters were created an e-mail account on marge automatically. E-mail addresses of all accounts hosted on marge have the form of name.surname@marge.uochb.cas.cz and name.surname@molecular.cz (both addresses apply to every account). Mails delivered to marge can either stay there and be read by one of the methods described later, or can be forwarded to other destinations.

The Institute mail server marilyn.uochb.cas.cz hosts e-mail accounts for addresses ending with '@uochb.cas.cz'. Users requiring an e-mail address of this form have to apply for account on marilyn with the network administrator using the form (see also instructions on the form). There messages delivered to marilyn can either stay there and be retrieved by one of the supported methods (for details see the form), or they can be forwarded to marge, or they can be forwarded elsewhere. If the mail forwarding is desirable, it is necessary to explicitly request it on the form (and/or negotiated with the administrator), as marilyn users are not allowed to set and/or change their mail processing rules themselves.

Reading mail on marge

To read a mail that was sent (directly or forwarded) to the local server marge.uochb.cas.cz you can:

  • use your web browser and click on this link
  • use your favorite mail program and set the account settings as follows
    • sending mail (outgoing mail server)
      • either marge.uochb.cas.cz as SMTP server on port 25 with no encryption and no authentication (faster, but works on UOCHB network only)
      • or marge.uochb.cas.cz as SMTP with TLS server on port 25 with TLS (sometimes also referenced as SSL) encryption and username/password authentication (slower, but works from anywhere) - see example
    • receiving mail (incoming mail server)
      • either marge.uochb.cas.cz as POP3S server (only SSL secure access, no POP3) using your login name and password for authentication
      • or marge.uochb.cas.cz as IMAPS server (only SSL secure access, no IMAP) using your login name and password for authentication
  • log in to marge.uochb.cas.cz using ssh and run pine program

Your primary mail address is first.last(a)marge.uochb.cas.cz; mail sent to the alias addresses login(a)marge.uochb.cas.cz or first.last(a)molecular.cz will be delivered to the proper mailbox too.
