General
As for the email communication, the Molecular Modeling Team members have numerous options available. There are two local servers that can host e-mail accounts or that can forward mails to external destinations.
Server marge
Every team member is entitled to apply for an e-mail account on the local mail server marge.uochb.cas.cz; the e-mail account was created automaticaly for those who have an account on any of the clusters. E-mail addresses of all accounts hosted on marge have the form of
name.surname(a)marge.uochb.cas.cz
and
name.surname(a)molecular.cz
(both addresses apply to every account). Mails delivered to marge can either stay there and be read by one of the methods described later, or can be forwarded to other destinations.
Server marilyn
The Institute mail server marilyn.uochb.cas.cz hosts e-mail accounts for addresses of the form
name.surname(a)uochb.cas.cz.
Users who require an e-mail address of this form have to apply for an account on marilyn with the Institute network administrator using the form (see also instructions on the form). The messages delivered to marilyn can either stay there and be retrieved by one of the supported methods (see the form for details), or they can be forwarded to marge, or elsewhere.
Warning: If the mail forwarding is desirable, it is necessary to explicitly request it on the form (and/or negotiate with the administrator), as marilyn users are not allowed to set and/or change their mail processing rules themselves later.
Reading mail
To read a mail that was sent to the local server marge.uochb.cas.cz you can:
- use your web browser and click on https://marge.uochb.cas.cz/mail
- use your favorite mail program (Thunderbird, Outlook Express, KMail, ...) and set the account settings as follows
- sending mail (outgoing mail server)
- either marge.uochb.cas.cz as SMTP server on port 25 with no encryption and no authentication (faster, but works on UOCHB network only)
- or marge.uochb.cas.cz as SMTP with TLS server on port 25 with TLS (sometimes also referenced as SSL) encryption and username/password authentication (slower, but works from anywhere) - see example
- receiving mail (incoming mail server)
- either marge.uochb.cas.cz as POP3S server (only SSL secure access, no POP3) using your login name and password for authentication
- or marge.uochb.cas.cz as IMAPS server (only SSL secure access, no IMAP) using your login name and password for authentication
- sending mail (outgoing mail server)
- log in to marge.uochb.cas.cz using ssh and run pine program
As described above, your primary mail address is firstname.lastname(a)marge.uochb.cas.cz; mail sent to the alias addresses login(a)marge.uochb.cas.cz or firstname.lastname(a)molecular.cz will be delivered to the proper mailbox too.
Redirection
Messages delivered to the server marge can be automatically redirected (forwarded) to any e-mail address. To set the permanent redirection, user must login to the server using ssh and create a file .forward (note the leading dot) in the home directory. This file should contain a list of addresses (one address per line) to which all incoming messages should be forwarded; if delivering a local copy of the message is desirable, the local address must be entered in the file too.
Examples:
To forward all messages to private.address@provider.com, enter
private.address@provider.com
to your .forward file.
To deliver all messages locally and forward them to private.address@provider.com enter
private.address@provider.com name.surname@marge.uochb.cas.cz
to your .forward file.
