Connecting a computer

To connect a computer to the local network in the Canon building (and to the Internet) it is necessary to register it first with the administrators (see Contacts). To speed up the registration, please get ready to provide the following information before you ask for the registration:

• Computer type.
  Is your computer desktop or notebook?
• Name for the computer.
  Choose a decent name that is short and easy to remember and that has not been used for a computer in the Institute network yet. Using girl's names is preferred by the Institute network administrators.
• Connection type.
  Do you want to connect using wired or wireless network?
• Network card address (MAC address).
  See this help page to get some hints. Do not forget that every network card has its own MAC address so for wired and wireless connections you need two addresses. Ask for help if you have troubles.
• Operating system.
  The system installed on the computer ... Linux, Windows, MAC OS, ...

The computer will be registered in the local DHCP server and it will be supplied with the IP address using the DHCP protocol. Set up the networking in your operating system to Obtain IP address automatically, IP address obtained from DHCP server, or similar setting. This setting is usually the default so in most cases you do not have to change anything when installing the system. Never set the system IP address or other network parameters to be a fixed numbers.

Note:

The IP address provided by the DHCP server is constant and does not change in time. It is bound to the network card MAC address and to the computer name.
